Physical Education (PE)
Why do we teach PE?
We recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long-term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
What do we teach in PE?
We follow the National Curriculum for PE. You can find the program of study for Key Stage One and Two here.
Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferable life skills such as fairness and respect, as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport. Through positive experiences of PE at school, we aim to foster a life-long love of sport and physical activity.
How do we teach PE?
We offer the children a wide range of sporting activities during their PE lessons. In EYFS, we develop the children’s fundamental movement and ball skills. These are then built on in Key Stage 1 as we begin to add in some net and wall, striking and fielding and target games. In Key Stage 2, these skills are built upon once again, as the children will participate in sports such as netball, rounders and tennis. Gymnastics and dance are taught throughout school and children in Key Stage 2 participate in swimming lessons.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
We are proud of the extra sporting opportunities we can offer to our children. We offer a range of after-school clubs (for example, multi-sports, dance, football, netball, gymnastics) that are delivered both by our staff and by external providers.
Children also have the opportunity to take part in competitions both within school and against other schools. We enter a wide range of competitions and tournaments (for example cross-country, netball and football) against local schools.
